Madness raise the Plate in Cardiff!

The Madness travelled to Cardiff Bay for the second leg of the Southern Rec Conference Plate Final on Saturday night walking into the rink with a 5-2 lead from the first leg in Gillingham.

The squad all travelled down early to ensure bus legs were not an issue and travelled with a full side. The game got off to a quick pace with both sides pushing for goals and whilst the Madness had their fair share of the action equally the Eagles looked sharp up front too. In a cruel blow it was the Cardiff side who took the lead just before the first break with a well worked goal.

The second period is normally the cursed period for the Madness and has historically seen the team suffer on the scoreboard and this was to be no exception. The Eagles, buoyed from the late first period goal, took the second period with another two goals scored and evening up the scoring on aggregate at 5-5 (3-0 on the night).

Its fair to say that the atmosphere in the changing room was tense before the third period and the Madness took the opportunity to regroup, focus and step back out onto the ice. It was not long before Tony Wood gave the team and travelling fans something to shout about as he brought the Madness into it. However, the Eagles hardworking ethic meant they kept pushing and scored a fourth - tying it back up at 6-6 overall.

And so it ended. The teams were deadlocked after 120 mins of hockey with both teams playing some nice hockey and having plenty of chances, and it would now come down to penalties to decide. On balance this was probably the fairest way to decide given that both teams have made respectable accounts of themselves with each taking convincing home wins and putting in great effort on the road trips.

Nigel Howard, Neil Ratcliffe and Nick Long would be the three penalty takers for the Madness with Carl Pattenden in the pipes trying to keep the Eagles shooters out. Nick Long scored the very first penalty with Howie and Rats unluckily missing the second and third respectively. In the Madness goal though, carrying on where Matt Daubney left off, Carl Pattenden was adding a new layer to the Madness wall.

Carl, who is a long serving player for the Madness, came up with his very best denying all Cardiff shooters. So it ended 4-1 on the night, 6-6 on aggregate and 1-0 to the Madness on penalties.

A superb effort by both teams and the Madness would like to say a massive well done to the Eagle outfit, a great bunch of guys who played some great hockey - Looking forward to the 10/11 season already.

The 2009/2010 season closed out with the lifting of a trophy but its fair to say that along the way it was a full squad performance from all registered players. Everyone put in something along the 37 games that made up this season and can be proud of this achievement.

Have a nice (albeit short) rest and here's to the 2010/2011 season!

Its all about TEAMWORK - Play as a team, lose as a team, win as a team.
